Let's protect our children from Facebook. Why? Read this.

13-06-10

We are supposed to be the clever generation: raised with old media, co-producer of the new social media revolution and very active online. We start to teach our children how to make their own profile on Facebook, MySpace or Hyves and we maded Facebook the biggest social media network site on Earth. We changed our social behaviour and shared our stories, our thoughts, our pictures, video and even our home adress and date of birth online. Identity theft came up and we understood that it was not that safe to have all your private details on the web. But there are bigger threats. Facebook knows that you like shopping because your Wall is filled with 'I am shopping at So and So' updates. As a result you will get advertising messages from retailers in your area. Based upon your content and a simple match of targeted marketing that I could live with. But it gets worse. You have all your family pictures on your profile page. And you think YOU own them. Forget it. In theory Facebook could use your holiday pictures and sell it to a commercial agency to use in their advertising campaign. And you won't get a dime. Facebook even has the right to delete your account and then you loose your friends, your pictures, your music and your video's. The result of 3 or 5 years network building can vanish just like that. Oh, and don't get more then 5.000 friends. Facebook does not allow you. Scary eh.  Facebook is growing from a fun network site to a commercial dictatorial monster and our generation is already lost. Your profile and digital assets are online and Facebook can sell it or delete it and there is nothing we can do about it. But we can protect our children from making the same mistake!

The next generation should be able to have their digital assets online in a safe and secured environment. And that is exactly the idea behind MyCube, developed by Johan Stael von Holstein. Johan started long long ago the Swedish IconLab that bought a.o the famous Dutch Lost Boys. Johan owned the biggest online agency worldwide, so he is not stupid. In fact, he is real nice guy and his MyCube idea is simple and clever: You create your own Cube and KPMG secures you that you are the only rightful owner of everything you put in it. You can share it with friends and with the public, and nobody is allowed to use it without your permission. But there is more. The youth unemployment rate is very high in Europe. And at the same time youth understand Internet the best. With MyCube they can monatize their digital content and start earning money. How does that work? Suppose you write a lot about scooters. Or iPhones. And your content is read by thousands of people. With MyCube you can choose to connect your content with a brand that you really like. And based upon the number of readers of your content, you will get money. So you own the digital content and if people read it and see some advertising around it, you get the money. Like AdSense, but now it is your sense. These are the basics of MyCube. I think it is freaking revolutionary and will be the fair alternative for Facebook. Be the first to use it and to tell your children and your friends about it. www.mycube.com
